Fall Meeting of The Auditing Roundtable
Philadelphia, PA - September 8-10, 2010

The Changing Climate for EHS Auditing

One of Philadelphia’s most famous residents, Benjamin Franklin, is quoted as saying “Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.”  Author and management expert, Peter Drucker, referenced another of Franklin’s quotations saying that “Everybody has accepted by now that change is unavoidable.  But that still implies that change is like death and taxes it should be postponed as long as possible and no change would be vastly preferable.  But in a period of upheaval, such as the one we are living in, change is the norm.”

Carol Collier, Executive Director of the Delaware River Basin Commission, will set the tone for out meeting with a keynote address about the breakthrough thinking that created the DRBC and prompt us for some novel ways of thinking and controls that will be needed for the future to effectively deal with the challenges of the climate change, water usage, energy needs and our economy.

A year ago, the United States Congress seemed on track for a cap and trade bill addressing control of greenhouse gases.  Now, like every other legislative agenda item, the future is not so certain.  But Mandatory Reporting of Greenhouse Gases is an obligation and Johnson & Johnson, a company in the middle of gathering information for its greenhouse gas inventory, will shed light on how they’re assuring this reporting obligation fits into its other sustainability strategies.  While almost everyone has an understanding now that they have a carbon footprint – what about your water footprint?  We’ll hear about why you ought to be keeping an eye on both your water and your carbon footprint, along with your energy usage.  We’ll look at tools that can be used for footprinting and sustainability, and Coca Cola, a leading company in water sustainability, will take the group though their water risk assessment approach and Global Water Stewardship Strategy and programs.

USEPA and OSHA adjust as well, starting with aligning themselves with a new administration and putting their increased inspection and enforcement budgets and plans to work.  We’re honored that Richard Fairfax, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA will present a keynote address on the reinvigoration of OSHA and the role of auditing.  Samantha Phillips Beers, Director Enforcement, Compliance and Environmental Justice at USEPA Region 3 will discuss how agency enforcement intends to bring about change.

Auditing programs must adapt as quickly as business in general in order to remain relevant.  What changes are your colleagues implementing to remain relevant?  What strategies are they employing to improve and support their business objectives?  What tools would make your job more efficient?  These are the issues to be discussed at the Fall Meeting of The Auditing Roundtable, the oldest and largest organization of professional EHS and management systems auditors.  Hear how others are assessing sustainability information as part of their EHS compliance and management systems audits.  Find out how others are coordinating self-assessment activity with their corporate auditing programs.

Through plenary sessions, exhibits, interest groups, industry roundtables and training courses, the Auditing Roundtable is the place for obtaining information and exchanging ideas.  Two CEU courses will be offered on Tuesday September 7, 2010.  Thea Dunmire (ENLAR Compliance Services) will lead a course on the role of Ethics in EHS Auditing and the other short course will focus on Root Cause Analysis and be led by Dr. Randy Roig (Specialty Technical Consultants).  Be there so that you can be a part of the changes that help improve your organization achieve success.

Course Summary

Ethics In EHS Auditing

Ethical issues arise in many environmental and OH&S auditing situations and impact how EHS auditing programs are designed and implemented.  Many professional associations, including the Board of Environmental, Health and Safety Auditor Certifications (BEAC) and the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH) have developed professional codes to guide EHS professionals in resolving ethical dilemmas.  This class will provide an introduction to these professional codes of conduct and the ethical principles set out in them.  The class will also introduce tools that can be used for evaluating ethical dilemmas and provide an interactive forum for discussing a series of scenarios that present potential ethical challenges.

This CEU course qualifies for CEU credit from BEAC (3 CPD hours) and ABIH (0.5 IH Ethics CM Points).

Instructor – Thea D. Dunmire, JD, CIH, CSP (ENLAR Compliance Services)

Root Cause Analysis

Effective root cause analysis is an essential part of corrective and preventive action.  From a stand-alone accident/incident investigation to an integrated process in an overall Plan-Do-Check-Act/Adjust management system continual improvement process, if your root cause analysis leads you to an erroneous, inconsequential or limited conclusion, your efforts and your action plan for improvement will be of limited value and could be counterproductive.  This class will help you understand and improve your incident investigation process, and your ability to utilize systemic methods for root cause analysis like Five Whys, KATTAR(S), Paredo Diagrams and Error/Failure Mode Effect Analysis.  Through discussion, interaction and examination of case studies, this class will help improve your root cause analysis skills, and consequently your ability to implement effective long-term solutions.

This course qualifies for CEU credit for BEAC (3 CPD hours) and will be examined for further CEU credit from other organizations.

Instructor – Dr. Randy Roig (Specialty Technical Consultants)

Water Resource Sustainability: Risk Management, Corporate Strategy and Governance

 Joe Rozza, Coca Cola Company
This presentation will begin with an overview of the issues that will shape the global water resource sustainability landscape in the coming decades - with an emphasis on potential implications for industry.  The Coca-Cola Company's risk management and global water stewardship strategy will then be presented, which have been designed to identify and mitigate current and future water related challenges.  The Corporate Governance model will be shared along with ideas for "manufacturing" organizational leverage to create an aligned organizational mandate to drive global sustainability programs.

Water Footprinting: What is it and is it Relevant to Environmental Audits?

 Greg Peterson, LimnoTech

Developed by the Water Footprint Network to quantify direct and indirect water inherent in products, water footprint accounting is gaining momentum in the business world. Businesses that rely on water for their operations and supply chains are beginning to recognize that increasing water scarcity in some regions present potential business risks, but also opportunities.  ISO Standards for water footprint accounting are also under development.  This presentation will address the basics of water footprint assessment, touching on what it is, where it came from, who is doing assessments – and why.

2:45 – 3:15 PM

Use of GEMI Tools for Environmental SustainabilitySteve Hellem (GEMI) – 30 Minutes

This presentation will provide an overview of available tools from the Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI) to help companies in various aspects of Environmental Sustainability management. The GEMI tools address areas such as climate change (Business and Climate Web Tool), water sustainability (Collecting the Drops: A Water Sustainability Planner), sustainable development (Sustainable Development (SD) Gateway and SD Planner), management information systems (GEMI HSE Web Depot, a framework for HS&E Management Information Systems).

“Mechanical Integrity Challenges in PSM Audits – It’s All About the Details” – David E. Cummings (Global Process Safety Competency Leader, The DuPont Company)

Effective auditing involving process safety management systems and performance requires adequate resources with requisite training and experience, as well as clearly defined audit protocols and data sampling approaches.  Mechanical integrity (MI) is one of fifteen key PSM elements within the audit process which includes the review of an extensive set of internal MI requirements, as well as the application of a significant number of external codes and standards (RAGAGEP’s).  This presentation will review recent modifications to DuPont’s second party PSM auditing process with a specific emphasis on mechanical integrity in order to improve the overall effectiveness of the audit process and deliver focused audit results to each plant site.  This includes a pilot program associated with thirty (30) audits where MI Specialists were applied to supplement and strengthen the existing audit protocol.

"Integrating Sustainability Data Reviews into Traditional EHS Audit Programs” (James Archer, PE, DEE, CHMM, Robert Costello, PE, Esq., CPEA, and Barbara Winter Watson, ERM)

Global businesses are increasingly collecting and publicly reporting environmental, health, and safety (EHS) data well beyond what is legally required.  These data often include energy and water use, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, waste generation and reuse/recycle/disposal, water discharges, material use, lost time incidents, recordable incidents, fatalities, occupational illnesses, near misses, violations, and fines. In addition, leading companies also report on broader sustainability or corporate social responsibility (CSR) metrics, such as EHS footprint reduction activities, EHS audits of supply chain partners, and social audits that address issues including child labor, forced labor, freedom to organize, diversity, and community impacts.  This panel will facilitate a discussion on the benefits and challenges of adjusting audit programs to include EHS and sustainability data assurance.

This point/counterpoint discussion will highlight key considerations for both industry and consultants involved in the RFP/Proposal process.  Panelists will cover: developing descriptive RFPs that elicit responsive proposals; ensuring that proposals clearly and accurately describe both approach and value proposition; and negotiating mutually agreeable contracts.  There will be time for a discussion of pitfalls and lessons learned.

2:30 – 3:00 PM

Use of Project Management Institute’s (PMI) project management framework in audit planning” (Wade Miller) – 30 Minutes

The project management framework from the Project Management Institute offers a robust tool set that when integrated into an audit program, provides a more transparent audit and focuses the facility and audit team on achieving compliance.  Integrating project management into an audit program requires looking at the entire audit from initiation until all action items are closed and lessons learned are documented.  Benefits include timely completion of corrective actions, more efficient resource use, and a higher level of engagement at the facility level.

About the Auditing Roundtable

The Auditing Roundtable, Inc. is a professional organization dedicated to the development and professional practice of environmental, health, and safety (EHS) auditing.

Today, the Roundtable represents the voice of the profession with more than 600 members, all of whom have agreed to abide by the Roundtable's Code of Ethics. Its mission is to enhance the practice of EHS auditing by creating an international forum and organization to advance ideas, procedures and member interaction.

The Roundtable is the original professional organization dedicated to furthering the development and professional practice of EHS auditing. The Roundtable was founded in January 1982, when managers of ten corporate environmental audit programs met to discuss their auditing programs and practices. The Roundtable has held regular meetings since that time and has undergone many important changes.
